Item Details.
Glazed skyphos decorated on either side with a standing schematic owl between two olive branches.

The Xenon Group designates a class of black-glaze vases with monochrome added-colour decoration, identified by Beazley and conventionally assigned to workshops active in eastern Basilicata and north-central Apulia between the second half of the fifth and the third quarter of the fourth century BC. The group takes its name from the inscription “XENON” on a kantharoid vessel in Frankfurt. The majority of recorded examples derive from indigenous Peucetian contexts, with a smaller number attested in Daunia. This example, depicting a stylised owl between two laurel branches, reproduces and imitates the so-called glaux skyphoi of Attic production, which enjoyed wide circulation in southern Italy.

Provenance: Kuizenga collection, the Netherlands, acquired in Dortmund, February 1996.
