Item Details.
Ovoid body on a low torus foot, tall cylindrical neck widening to a broad flaring disc mouth, with a singlestrap handle rising from the shoulder to the neck. Neck, mouth and handle are covered in black glaze, and a band of short tongues runs round the base of the neck above the shoulder.

The body carries a female head in profile to the left, reserved against the black ground. The hair is rendered as a solid black mass with a wavy contour along the brow, and the head is bound in a sakkos, its surface articulated with rows of fine dots and curving lines in dilute glaze. Details of the eye, brow and lips are drawn in thinned glaze with a light hand. A row of dots marks the band below the ear. Behind and beneath the head the field is filled with a large palmette and spiralling tendrils, the volutes broadly drawn and reserved against the glaze.

Isolated female heads set among palmettes and tendrils are among the commonest subjects in the late Apulian workshops of the third quarter of the fourth century BC. The drawing here, in particular the treatment of the sakkos and the schematic profile, stands close to the Group of Monopoli.
