Item Details.
Roman solid gold snake bracelet of round sectioned coiled wire, flat at the terminal with the head of snake decorated with deeply incised details and tail curving and curling along the body. Nicely decorated with a line pattern for the scales and an inserted cabochon garnet. The snake was also considered a symbol of power and protection in ancient Roman art. It was believed to possess protective qualities and could ward off evil or bring good fortune. Snakes appeared on various objects, such as jewellery, amulets and talismans, serving as symbols of strength and divine favour.

Provenance: Private UK collection, acquired prior to 2000.
