Item Details.
Large, decorated with a band of ivy leaves with berries and bands of dots and geometric patterns, rays on the shoulder. Strap handle in black slip attached.

This black-figure lekythos on white ground is decorated solely with geometric and vegetal motifs, at the centre of which an ivy tendril is prominent. Form and decoration are typical of the so-called Beldam Group, a designation encompassing a series of comparable lekythoi produced in both black-figure and red-figure techniques, most likely within the same Athenian workshop between 480 and 450 BC. These vessels enjoyed wide circulation beyond Greece, particularly in southern Italy.

Provenance: UK , West Sussex private collection, acquired in the 1990s.
