Item Details.

The tondo depicting a standing nude youth, probably an athlete, facing right, holding a javelin in his right hand. Beazley called him the Calliope Painter naming him after the figure of the muse depicted on his vases in New York and London. Many other vases have been attributed to his hand on the basis of style. He specialised mostly in decorating cups.

Provenance: The Charterhouse School collection, London, by 1921. The Charterhouse Collection; Sotheby’s, London, 5 November 2002, lot 52 (part lot). Private collection, UK, acquired from the above sale.
