Enlivened in white slip with the profile head of a woman on the shoulders flanked by foliate design, the ribbed body with a central band of scrolling design and the everted rim with wavy edging.

This bombylios belongs by form and decoration to the so-called Alexandria Group, a large and prolific circle of South Italian vase-painters working in the Gnathia style, whose individual names remain unknown. The group takes its name from the substantial number of examples recovered from Alexandria. The painters characteristically decorated the smooth zones of ribbed vessels, applying added colours — principally white and yellow — over the black-glazed surface, with typical motifs including birds, female heads, and sprays of ivy or floral elements.
