Item Details.
Wearing crested helmet, strong facial features, his left side with a small support strut. Previously part of a frieze.

The size and quality of the carving as well as the remains of the strut suggest the head was part of a sarcophagus. A number of Roman sarcophagi survive with scenes of battles, both mythological and historical depicting helmeted warriors.

Provenance:Acquired by the previous owner in 1973 from an aristocratic collection formed in the 1950’s. Published Bonham’s auction, Oct. 2008 - 258.
