Item Details.
The elegant figure of the goddess finely carved of black faience, standing nude in a striding pose, excellent facial and hair details, clenched fists held at the sides, wearing a schilbe fish atop her crown forming an exquisite headdress.
Hatmehit was the goddess of fish, water, and fertility, primarily worshipped in the Nile Delta city of Mendes (Djedet). Known as "she who is at the head of the fish," she was often depicted as a woman with a fish on her head or a fish-crown. Later regarded as the wife of Banebdjedet (the soul form of Osiris - Ba), she was therein worshipped as a form of Isis, mothering Harpocrates (Horus). She represented life and abundance.

Provenance: with Royal-Athena Galleries, New York. Lloyd and Jeanne Raport Collection, Washington DC and Florida, acquired from the above, 17 November 1984.
