Finely engraved intaglio with the winged figure of Eros riding on Nemean Lion (associated with Heracles), the whip raised behind his head (Thracian type), star fillers. Exquisite details.

The “lion-rider” intaglios are scarcer than those showing Eros on a dolphin and were carved in the Balkan provinces. The myth of Eros riding on Heracles' Lion is a less common and more symbolic representation. This imagery symbolises the power of love conquering even the most formidable and untamed forces. The juxtaposition of the tender, playful Eros and the fierce, invincible lion illustrates that love can master even the greatest challenges and wildest beasts.
